Better Than Shakespeare

Auditioned for a play so unwittingly
Landed the roles, both you and me
It started so well, a clever façade
Never knew truth till it showed finally

I played the victim, you played the misunderstood
And the musical ran for far longer than it probably should
The audiences dispersed, no ovations, encores
The play at last faded, and in stepped a new foot

Tired of performing in this sick endless script
My perspiration outnumbered by the blood my heart dripped
I put in my last performance and again my eyes bled
Not tears of regret, but of relief now reaped

Mixed emotions centrestage as the lights start to wane
The actors bow, the curtains close, the audience go insane
The finale wasn’t how it should have been, for I rewrote the end
The victim replaced, walks out the door, and the play starts all over again

Even Shakespeare couldn’t have written a play more unpredictable.
But then again, he never met you.
